This assignment asks you to write a compare and contrast essay. The essay should be 900 words (about 3 1/2pages—not including images), double spaced, 12 size font, Times New Roman. Please include the images to the end of your paper. This paper may require some additional research on your end–you may use any citation style you like, but I will offer 5 extra points for the use of Chicago footnotes. The Powerpoint slides are available for the images you should discuss.
The essay should answer the questions “How are the artworks similar? How are the artworks different?” The key to a good compare and contrast essay is to organize the paragraphs by theme where both works of art are discussed all the way through. For example, if you decided to discuss the scale of the object, be sure you do so for both objects in the same paragraph. This will set you up to write a more clear and focused paragraph where you can easily compare and contrast objects together. You should choose any of the formal qualities– such as style, material, size, use of line, texture, shape, etc. for your comparisons. You also need to include a discussion of the objects’ functions and meanings. Be sure you explain what both of the object are used for and who used them? Where were they originally located? Who was supposed to see or not see the works. The Justinian & Theodora piece, along with the The Prophet Muhammad, are religious in one form or another, be sure you discuss how religious ideas about power, picture making and worship were unfolding for both cultures and religious practices. The Powerpoints are available on the modules and all of the works have a video or audio to accompany them. Use those resources!
**Remember, the most important thing is to discuss the works together.** So for example, if you make a point that the materials are the same – both are made out of stone – you need to explain why that is important and talk about both works together. Or if the subject matter is different – why is it different? what is being portrayed in each work? Think about the history of the object and unpack what the differences might tell us now.
