An industrial facility spills 400 kg of dichloromethane into a river 11km upstream from a drinking water plant intake. The river has a discharge volume of 4 m3/min, a slope of 0.004, a width of15 mand a depth of 15 cm.Be sure to submit the calculation approach used for this problem in addition to the solution sheets (i.e. the Matlab or Excel spreadsheet)
a. Use the approach outlined in the text Chapter 2.2 to calculatethe longitudinal dispersion coefficient DL in units of m2/s
b. Using the value from part (a) and the other information given in the problem, calculate the maximum dichloromethane concentration expected at the drinking water intake.
c. How long will the river concentration of dichloromethane exceed the EPA maximum contaminant level for dichloromethane?
d. Repeat these calculations if the pollutant undergoes first order decay through microbial bioattenuation with a pollutant half-life of 45hours
e. A local resident suggests an engineering solution that will decrease the shear velocity of the river while not changing any other parameter of the river. Without doing calculations, discuss what impact decreasing shear velocity will have on pollutant mixing and state one pro and one con from this proposed change.
