A Written Reading Assignment

The main premise of this assignment is to have you reflect on and confront your personal beliefs about mathematics and how your mathematics disposition impacts instruction and your students. A disturbingly large percent of the American population fears and loathes mathematics. Math phobia is a widespread national problem. Despite this reality, educators have pressed on with ineffective teaching approaches that have outlasted their usefulness and perpetuated fear.

The way we have traditionally taught mathematics has created a recurring cycle of math phobia that has been difficult to break. As you read Chapter 1, Teaching Mathematics in the 21st Century, reflect on how you see yourself as a mathematician and how that may impact your instruction; consider how mathematical reform has impacted math education and will continue to influence math instruction in the classroom; think about what is necessary to effectively teach the content standards while weaving in the Standards for Mathematical Practice; and prepare to accept the invitation to learn and grow as a teacher of mathematics.
