The enduring relevance of the arts and humanities is that they encourage us to consider a number of “big ideas.” What is culture? How do we go about studying it? What is the relationship between works of art and the culture in which they are created? How is human meaning generated through artworks?
In this Short Essay, you will use the ideas you have studied throughout the course in addition to the insights you have gained from your deep thinking about your chosen work(s) of art from the WORKSHEET and discussion forums to discuss why humans are driven to express themselves in so many ways. You will draw conclusions about the reciprocal relationship between forms of expression and the context in which they are created and experienced. Finally, you will explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today.
Following critical elements must be addressed:
Explain why you believe humans have a need to express themselves through created artworks? Explain the larger human need to express using the insights you gained from studying your chosen work(s) of art.
Explain how you think the act of human creative expression impacts and is impacted by the culture in which it was created. Explain the larger reciprocal relationship between human creative expression and the culture in which it was created using the insights you gained from studying your chosen work(s) of art.
Explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today. Be sure to be specific about the issues you are addressing. Use the insights you gained from studying your chosen artwork(s) and explain how creative expression can impact today’s issues.

Submit your response to the following question as a 3-5 page essay. Please Let me know if you need me to clear anything up. Do not hesitate to ask.
It needs to be 3 to 5 pages (3 full pages at the least). 12 pt font, double spaced, normal margins, and MLA or CMS citation of sources (stick to assigned sources)
For the essay, you need to include three primary sources in your answer (a list of these are provided below). By “include” I mean use quotes and analyze the passages you choose. Quotes and paraphrasing must be properly cited (MLA format). Make sure your answers are thorough and precise. This is not the time for being vague.
Use the following prompt as the basis for your final essay – the prompt pertains to the readings assigned in Week 6.
The 1980s and 1990s were a period in which globalization took a number of different forms. Discuss the ways in which technology and economic developments began to blur the borders of nation-states. Although many people saw these developments as decided advantages for society, in what ways did they also make businesses, governments, and individuals more vulnerable?
If you choose to write the essay, you will need to 3-5 page paper (double spaced, 12 pt font) and you must include at least 3 primary sources (chosen from the list below) uploaded as a word document to this assignment page (just like the tests you’ve been taking throughout the semester). Keep in mind that I use Turnitin to detect plagiarism. any use of sources without citing them, in other words, any attempt to steal someone else’s words and ideas without proper acknowledgment will result in an automatic ZERO. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!

Required Primary Source reading:
— Required Reading: Riefenstahl, Memoirs, “Victory of the Faith;” “Triumph of the Will”
(pages 143-151, 156-166)
Write 2-3 pages minimum (although you may write more). Use only the Required Primary Source readings listed directly above, and be sure to use specific quotes and examples to answer the questions.
This assignment does not have to be structured as a fully formed essay, but should be written clearly and without typos so that I can understand what you’re arguing. I’m looking for creativity in analysis (and not a summary of the sources), i.e. your thoughtful and in-depth interpretation of the primary sources. Try to dig down below the surface image as you analyze the sources.
Prompt: The film Triumph of the Will has been called a masterpiece of propaganda. In her Memoirs, Leni Riefenstahl claims that she did not want to make a propaganda film, that she was not a Nazi, and that the film did not reflect her personal views.
Look for evidence in her Memoirs, “Victory of the Faith;” “Triumph of the Will” (pages 143-151, 156-166), for two things:
Leni Riefenstahl actively shaped the content of the film. The film reflected her political and artistic vision.
Leni Riefenstahl was forced into making a film that reflected Hitler’s views and not her own, and she acted out of fear.
Question: Based on what you find in her Memoirs, do you believe her that she acted out of fear, or do you think her actions tell a different story?
***
Be sure to use specific examples and page numbers.

Instructions for “Colonial Labor and Fur Trade”:
read the three documents linked below. Using the primary documents, write an essay answering the prompts listed below. There are also two optional articles provided for additional references.your answers and must be more than 400 words in length (400 for the whole assignment, not 400 for each question). Direct quotes do not count toward the required word count. Articles:
These articles are quite long, so you do not need to read them all the way through. Use them more as references for specific elements of the fur trade.
Article 1: “The Economic History of the Fur Trade: 1670-1870” – https://eh.net/encyclopedia/the-economic-history-of-the-fur-trade-1670-to-1870/ Article 2: “A Brief History of the Beaver Trade” – https://humwp.ucsc.edu/cwh/feinstein/A%20brief%20history%20of%20the%20beaver%20trade.html
Part 1 Questions: 1. How do Documents 1 and 2 relate to the colonial labor systems that developed during the 1600s and 1700s (i.e. indentured servitude and slavery)? Compare the experiences of each author. 2. What do Document 3, the image, and the articles reveal about the relationships between Native Americans and European Colonists during the 1600s and 1700s? How and why did the relationship differ between different Native American groups and European empires (including the Spanish, English, and French colonies)?
3. Based on your lecture notes and the textbook, explain how the documents, the image, and the articles relate to the history of expansion, immigration (free and forced), and economic development in Europe’s North American colonies during the 1600s and 1700s.

The idea is very simple: pick a case study pertaining to the culture wars. Then, analyze
the case study through a scholarly lens. The point is to educate the class about some
interesting facet of the culture wars.
RESEARCH PROPOSAL COMPONENTS:
1st Section: Introduce your case study
– Begin your proposal by describing a concrete case study that you wish to
write about. The case study must illustrate some facet of the culture wars. It
can be gleaned from a news story, a magazine article, a book, a media
campaign (political, commercial, social), or perhaps any combination of
these. It must be some clearly identifiable culture wars phenomenon suitable
for serious scholarly study.
2nd Section: Spell out your research problem
– This is the most important part of the project. It consists of a three-step
formula: topic, question, and significance. You will need to 1) make your
topic explicit, 2) pose a research question about that topic, and 3) state what
difference your project will make either to understanding or to practice.
• EXAMPLE: 1) I am conducting a study of the Trump Administration’s
child separation policy because 2) I want to determine if it constitutes
a case of political trolling 3) in order to inform social media scholars
of the corrosive effects of the culture wars on the practice of
democracy.
– NOTE: Coming up with a good question is the most challenging part of a
serious research paper. Always observe the following rules when formulating your question:
• Do not ask a question with an obvious answer.
• Ask “yes” or “no” question. Do not ask a “why,” “what,” or “how” question.
• Ask an empirical question about what is or is not the case, not a
moral question about what should or should not be the case.Once you’ve spelled out your research problem, state your hypothesis. For this, you will simply turn your question into either an affirmative or negative statement.
EXAMPLE: “My hypothesis is that the Trump Administration’s child
separation policy does indeed constitute a case of political trolling.”
– Who is your ideal target audience and why? Why should they care? What
might they hope to benefit from your research? Note: Your audience can’t be
“society.” It’s important to be specific.
3rd Section: Recommendations
– State potential recommendations or lessons learned, depending on possible
outcome(s) of your research. If the answer to your hypothesis is “yes,” then
what are the practical implications? If the answer is “no,” then what are the
practical implications?
4th Section: Annotated Bibliography
– Minimum of 8 sources (at least 5 scholarly)
– CITATION STYLE: APA FORMATTING: 12 point, Times New Roman, double-spaced
LENGTH: This should be a minimum of 4 pages.
