For reasons both social and technical, please do not introduce any external voices, and especially any introduced as somehow authoritative. The assignment should offer the opportunity to introduce your tentative analysis and theoretical reflection. It is not a place for googling what other people might say about an issue being posed, nor for any pose of your lecturing others. No one is in a position to settle issues that are inevitably subtle and complex. Conclusions are not really at issue: the intellectual process is.
Discussion: Everything is Permitted?
When a theorist goes the route of asking rhetorical questions, then the expected answers should not beg the question. Setting aside the possibility that theistic philosophers would simply swoon at the question “if God turned out not to exist, then slavery would be OK?” – as Louise Antony seems to think – what sort of response would be open to them?

Weight Question Instructions
(30) 1. Read the essay and use one of the active reading techniques, SQ4R or Reading Inventory. Document your active reading, and submit your notes. For those steps usually done “in your head” (such as recite), write down briefly what you did in the step.
Note: if you use a Reading Inventory, when you reach “rereading,” only answer the questions from the first three bullets of “rereading” listed in the Reading Inventory table (Reader’s Choice 41).
Note: you may photograph or scan your active reading notes and include them in your assignment document.
(10) 2. Create an outline to help you make an accurate summary of the author’s arguments. Identify the specific kind of argument being made, the subarguments, the assumptions, the critical details, and the important examples.
(20) 3. Recall that Unit 4 demonstrates outlining techniques. Include citations for paraphrased and quoted material.
Create an outline that sketches your critical review essay on the author’s essay (Unit 9). Include what you think is most important from the summary for your critical review, and apply the standards of evaluation (Part B, Units 6, 7, 8, and 9) that you think are most appropriate. Include citations for paraphrased and quoted material.
(40) 4. Write a complete rough draft critical review essay (1000–1250 words) based on the outline you completed in question 3. Include citations for paraphrased and quoted material.

Which other major ethical system is Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics most compatible with: Bentham’s Utilitarianism, Mill’s Utilitarianism, or Kant’s Deontology? Make sure to spell out the basics of each of those systems and make your case from that foundation
Length: 1000-1500 words, double-spaced
**Grading: This paper will be worth 100 points (that’s 20% of your overall grade).
This assignment is neither a research paper nor a book report! Rather, it is a position paper that you are to develop using only the materials we have covered in class. You are to adopt a position on one of the topics posed and defend your position as thoroughly and as convincingly as possible. You should already have plenty of material to work with from the readings and class discussions. As such, DO NOT LOOK UP AND INCLUDE OUTSIDE SOURCES. In generating this paper, you should be analyzing and commenting on the following:
1) the background issues addressed by the topic (what are the theories and ideas in play?)
2) the relevant views of particular philosophers (from our text and/or lecture) on the topic
3) your assessment of the issues raised
Suggested approach: Express yourself in your own words whenever possible (imagine you are explaining your thoughts on the topic to a bright friend who has never heard of it before), and save the quotes for very important phrases that you would like to leave the way the author expressed them. Don’t “pad” your paper with quotes, and never put a quote in a paper without any explanation. Quotes are not self-explanatory; you must follow up and explain why you think the quote is important.
In addition: DO NOT ASSUME THAT YOUR AUDIENCE IS EVEN FAMILIAR WITH ANY OF THE MORAL THEORIES IN QUESTION. It is your job to explain these moral models both thoroughly and concisely.

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your familiarity with the prewriting and idea-generating skills you practiced in Units 4 and 5.
Use this essay in Reader’s Choice and complete questions 1–5 in the table below.
Mair, Raif. “Raise the Driving Age.” Reader’s Choice: Essays for Thinking, Reading, and Writing. 7th ed., edited by Kim Flachmann, Michael Flachmann, Alexandra MacLennan, and Jamie Zeppa, Pearson, 2013, pp. 452–456.
Weight Question Instructions
(20) 1. Drawing on Unit 4, create a map or outline of the essay you are reviewing. You can map ideas using your word processor or take a photo of a drawing. If there is quoted material on your map or outline, enclose it in quotation marks and include a citation.
(20) 2. Using your map or outline, write a paragraph (about 200 words) that summarizes the essay and explains the topic, purpose, and main idea of the essay. Include citations for all paraphrased or quoted material.
(20) 3. Identify the primary rhetorical mode the writer uses in the essay. Drawing on the appropriate course outline logs, write a paragraph (about 200 words) where you explain why this mode is dominant, using examples to support your position. Is this mode appropriate? Why or why not?
(20) 4. Find examples in the essay of two other rhetorical modes used in addition to the primary one. For each, identify which mode it demonstrates, and quote the relevant example. Give an example of each mode, and explain how it develops and supports the author’s purpose.
(20) 5. Choose an idea within the essay that can act as a prompt. Using one of the five strategies for generating ideas (Reader’s Choice 29–33), create some prewriting on the idea you chose. Whatever format, keep to less than 200 words. You can submit a photo of your work if it is not done on a word processor.

Your Review should explain:Points from the reading you found insightful or impactful—particularly as it relates to your understanding of the nature and practice of law—and why; DO NOT SIMPLY WRITE OUT EXACT WHAT IS IN THE TEXT BUT THOROUGHLY EXPLAIN IT AS IT RELATES TO YOUR UNDERSTANDING
One or two points you found challenging or that raised new questions for you, and why.
Your Review need not be evenly divided between the two components above, but it should explain why you think the readings are true or false, persuasive or unpersuasive; and how you understand the connection and relevance of these specific concepts to the general field of jurisprudence. It should be clear that you have a clear understanding of the reading.
