Midterm Exam Essay
The essay question will be available for you to view for 48 hours. Check the course calendar for dates. After viewing the essay question, you can prepare your answer, in the form of an outline, in advance of actually writing out your answer. Look back at the images, be sure to listen (again) to the interviews with the two artists, and decide on your pairing. Prepare your outline fully, so that you feel ready to sit down and write. Make sure you have a good thesis, three body paragraphs developing that thesis, and a concluding paragraph.
Note: A thorough response to this question, should only take about 90 minutes to complete.
Midterm Exam Essay Question
In Lesson 7, we looked at a selection of images by two contemporary artists, Zanele Muholi and Jenny Saville. For your midterm essay, you will compose a mini-lecture similar to what the Palmer Museum curator did, comparing and contrasting the works of these artists by focusing on one image from each artist. The essay should go beyond a simple descriiption of the images. Rather, you are being asked to analyze using feminist terminology, and a feminist approach, that is, an approach that seeks to reveal relations of social power and cultural mores or beliefs that impact how an individual sees himself or herself.
Choose your pair carefully because the quality of your essay will depend on it! Think about an important point of comparison. For example:
Each artist works in “the Nude”.
The selection of images you chose from each artist includes at least one portrait of a transgender individual.
One artist deals with race, the other not (at least in this selection).
Both artists feature “women together” (Are they lesbian? Or, are they not lesbian? How can you tell? Why does it matter?).
Each artist is known for the “extravagance” of her images.
These are just a few possibilities. We recommend that you watch the interview/video of each artist first, and look for common points of interest or approach as they talk about their work. Whichever two images you choose, be sure that there is enough “meat” in there for you to develop a coherent, organized argument to compare and contrast the two.
Assignment Requirements
Your paper should be between 600 and 750 words in length (a five-paragraph essay that is insightful, coherent and well-written is sufficient). Don’t pad, thinking that your grade corresponds to length.
The most important criteria is to organize your essay around a major feminist principle or analytical approach that you have learned in the course up to this point.
The essay should include a clear thesis, a clear argument with supporting facts and/or details, and a conclusion. In your analysis, you must:
include at least one paragraph on each image you choose (which you should identify in the essay by title and artist).
reference each of the two artists’ interviews (use proper citation and include minute and second timestamp, such as 10:32 – 11:05). Find something that will enhance your argument about their work.
Any sources used in your paper should be cited properly, using Modern Language Association (MLA) format.
Write your response as a separate Word document and title it using the following naming convention (LastName_FirstName, Midterm). Submit/upload your paper to the drop-box located in the Midterm Exam folder.
The paper is due according to the due date on the course calendar.
