1Disabilities are a complex and multifaceted issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Of the three types of disabilities, I would like to focus on emotional disabilities. One person I would like to profile who has an emotional disability is Monica, a 25-year-old woman who has been diagnosed with major depression disorder. Major depression disorder is a mental health condition that falls under the category of emotional disabilities. Major depressive disorder falls under the category of emotional disabilities. The effects of major depressive disorder on Monica are significant and challenging. Monica faces a range of challenges in functioning in everyday society due to her depression. Monica struggles with a constant feeling of sadness and hopelessness, which affects her ability to concentrate, work efficiently, and participate in social activities. Moreover, because of her emotional disability, Monica has difficulty finding and maintaining meaningful relationships.
The pervasive sense of sadness and emotional dysregulation also makes it hard for Monica to enjoy activities she once enjoyed. As a prevalent psychiatric disorder, major depressive disorder is characterized by emotional dysregulation and cognitive dysfunction. Monica’s condition is a leading cause of disability worldwide and can lead to premature death if left untreated. To overcome the challenges that her emotional disability poses, Monica has turned to therapy and medication to help manage her symptoms. Despite the progress made in developing antidepressant treatments, major depressive disorder remains a significant challenge for Monica and others like her who live with this condition. It is crucial that society continues to work towards creating more accommodating and inclusive environments for people like Monica who live with emotional disabilities. I believe that people with emotional disabilities like major depressive disorder face significant challenges in everyday society. It is important to increase awareness and understanding of these challenges and to work towards creating more accessible and inclusive environments that support their needs.
Furthermore, as the prevalence of major depressive disorder continues to grow, there is a need for continued research and development of effective treatments to support those living with this condition. Despite the difficulties that Monica faces due to her emotional disability, she remains resilient and determined in managing her symptoms. As a society, we must strive towards creating more understanding and compassionate communities that support individuals like Monica who are living with emotional disabilities. By doing so, we can work towards achieving greater inclusivity and accessibility for all members of our society.
2.Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an emotional disability affecting one’s behavior, communication, and social interactions. It exists within the developmental disabilities set and impacts people of all backgrounds, genders, and ages. Solmi et al. (2022) revealed that ASD is four times more prevalent in males than females and can be identified at eighteen months or younger. ASD has various symptoms and signs with differing severity and causes significant difficulties to persons with disability. ASD’s effects on people are multifaceted and diverse. Individuals with ASD can experience social communication and interaction challenges, like difficulties in keeping eye contact, establishing and maintaining acquaintances, and comprehending nonverbal cues (Solmi et al., 2022). Communication difficulties can be seen in the individual’s monotonous or constrained interests or behaviors and their deferred language development.
ASD also affects one’s comprehension of figurative language and abstract concepts causing poor interaction outcomes. Repetitive actions like body rocking or hand-flapping and intense obsession with particular objects or subjects also affect their body posture and concentration. The condition also causes sensory sensitiveness, overwhelmed by particular textures, lights, or sounds affecting their social presence, especially in busy and noisy settings. The challenges experienced by ASD people can be extensive, and social circumstances may be puzzling and devastating, resulting in trouble creating meaningful connections and feeling isolated.
Communication impairment can deter expressing desires, emotions, and needs, adversely affecting their relationships and interactions (Solmi et al., 2022). Learning environments may pose difficulties, demanding specialized provisions and supports to accommodate education styles and cater to personal needs. Sensory sensitivity can cause sensory overwork and challenge circumnavigation in various settings, which causes distress and anxiety. Everyday survival for such people requires proactive support to ensure easy navigation in life and improved life quality.
